Biographical sketch

Karin Hek received her BSc degree in Biomedical Sciences from the Free University of Amsterdam in 2005. In 2007 she received her MSc degree in Cancer Genomics and Developmental Biology from the University of Utrecht. She started her PhD project on anxiety disorders in the elderly in 2008 at the department of Psychiatry in cooperation with the department of Epidemiology, at the Erasmus MC in Rotterdam.

 
Research interests
The research of Karin Hek focuses on anxiety disorders in the elderly. Her research project is set within the Rotterdam Study, a large prospective population-based cohort of elderly persons in Ommoord, Rotterdam. Data on anxiety disorders and many other variables, including depression, were collected during follow-up rounds for more than 5000 individuals. In addition, genetic material was available for most individuals.
Karin uses the data from the Rotterdam Study to gain insight in the epidemiology of anxiety disorders in the elderly and to identify genetic variants associated with anxiety disorders.
